Is there any way to create folders for received email on a Gmail account?

For example, if I get a lot of different emails from regular senders, can I create folders these emails go straight into when I receive them rather than just into my inbox? (So say a folder named after the sender and all their emails go straight into there). It's getting difficult to sift through my inbox all the time...
