What motive do high schools have to have a good sports team?

Do they get extra funding? Is it all for bragging rights? Whats the big deal with having the best football, basketball, soccer, ect. team? Personally I believe that school sports take away from effort and spending that could better go towards scholastic extracurriculars. Unless their is some benifit for the school, arent sports a waste of tax payer dollars?
